The Digilab is the Národní filmový archiv’s department for digital post-production and the treatment of digital data. The department will expand significantly as part of the Video Archive project with regards to the processing of obsolete, particularly tape-based media and their digitisation in archival quality.

During the course of the project, the Digilab will be fully equipped for processing formats including Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, U-Matic, VHS, VHS-C, miniDV, DVCAM, Digital8, Hi8, Video 8, and Betamax, as well as a hardware device to work with computer diskettes. The lab also contains a FilmFabriek HDS 8mm 4K scanner and a Spirit 16/35mm HD scanner.

The tape formats are converted to uncompressed data that serve as the foundation for long-term storage on LTO tapes and the production of distribution media, usually in DCP form.

Given the fragile nature of media from the 1980s and 1990s, we create and store digital archival objects of the works as long as the state of the materials permits and devices for reproduction are available. In the case of the original analogue media, then, the Video Archive stores only digital data. The film materials are stored in the film deposit, with adequate digital scans produced for research and presentation purposes.

In the case of film materials, we produce only preview or distribution scans, with the film materials remaining stored in the film deposit.
